What is a Doula?

A Doula is a woman who attends the birthing family before, during and after a birth. The Doula is trained to provide continuous emotional, physical and informational support to the mother and family

 

The Postpartum Doula

The role of the Postpartum Doula is to “Mother the New Mother” so that she, and her loved ones, may ease into their new roles confidently and smoothly. Postpartum Doulas are  experienced in caring for mothers and newborns. As a non-judgmental caregiver, she assists the new mother with her recovery from the birth experience, allowing her to focus on the needs of the new baby or babies.

 

The Sleep Doula

The Sleep Doula provides consultation and support when baby is older to help him or her develop good sleep habits and learn to sleep through the night.

 

The Birth Doula

The Birth Doula offers help, information and continuous emotional reassurance and comfort to the laboring mother and her partner.  

 

Basic Needs of a new Mother

Rest so she can heal.

Gentle education and reassurance.

Nourishing food and drink.

Relinquishing of practical chores so she can withdraw into herself and her baby.

Knowledge about what is going on with her body and spirit.

Realistic ideas of the range of feelings other women experienced.

Place to “debrief” and talk about birth and her emotions

Mothering Mother to feel protected, honored and replenished.
